About Rodney Gabriel

Rodney Gabriel, MD, MAS, is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He is a multi-faceted professional with appointments spanning both clinical and research roles including, the Director of the Division of Perioperative Informatics, Clinical Director of Anesthesiology at the Koman Outpatient Pavilion Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Chief of the Division of Regional Anesthesia.

Dr. Gabriel obtained his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School/Brigham & Women’s Hospital. He then completed a clinical fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine and a research fellowship with the National Library of Medicine in Biomedical Informatics at the University of California, San Diego. Furthermore, he received a Master’s degree in Clinical Research at UCSD.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Gabriel is nationally and internationally known for his expertise in acute and chronic pain management and operationalizing processes within an outpatient surgery center. His concentrated efforts are channeled into pioneering methods that reduce opioid usage and revolutionizing the performance of interventional pain modalities. These include his work in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, peripheral neuromodulation, and cryoneurolysis. Dr. Gabriel serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and Scientific Reports. He is a founding member of the International Society for Ultrasound Guided Cryoneurolysis. In 2018 he was awarded the Whitehill prize for excellence by the Academy of Clinical Scholars at UCSD and was named of the Rising stars in Healthcare under 40 by the Becker’s Hospital Review in 2022.

In addition to his clinical and administrative roles at UCSD, Dr. Gabriel’s focuses his research endeavors in the integration of multimodal artificial intelligence and medicine. His focus encompasses a wide spectrum, from crafting state-of-the-art machine learning-based predictive models, leveraging large clinical datasets, to harnessing the power of natural language processing (e.g. large language models), and developing novel ways technology can detect clinical risk factors and improve patient outcomes. Dr. Gabriel is a committed administrative leader, mentor, clinician, and scientist who aims to expand the field of perioperative informatics through inclusion of new technologies and advanced clinical expertise.
